Two Harbors Day- Twin Ports History Fest

Join the Lake County Historical Society, Two Harbors Public Library, and the Dorothy Molter Museum in celebrating local history as part of the second annual Twin Ports History Fest! Two Harbors events will center around the Two Harbors Public Library at 320 Waterfront Drive and the Two Harbors Depot at 520 South Avenue Friday, March 31st.

DEPOT MUSEUM EVENTS at 520 SOUTH AVE

10 AM to 4 PM: Depot Galleries Open

The Depot Museum is one of the three historic sties managed by the Lake County Historical Society. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Depot was built in 1907 as company headquarters and passenger Depot. While the last passenger train departed the Depot in 1969, the North Shore Scenic Railroad has been running the Two Harbors Turn to our Depot since the mid 1990s.

Lighthouse Tours: 11:30 AM & 1:30 PM Departing Depot Museum Store

Both tours will be departing the Depot Museum store. Enjoy a short bus ride to Lighthouse Point where the oldest, continuously operating lighthouse sits between Agate & Burlington Bays. Currently operated as a Bed & Breakfast, enjoy a tour of the keeper’s quarters, learn a bit about the history of the light, and its first keeper family, the Lederles.

TWO HARBORS LIBRARY at

10 AM to 11 AM (Community Room): Cup of History with Dr. Steven Matthews: Maps of the New World and the Curious Case of the “Discovery of America” 

The European discovery of the American continents was not an event which occurred as the result of one voyage of discovery and conquest or another, but it was a process that took nearly two century. Dr. Steven Matthews of UMD’s Museum Studies program reveals the curious tale told by maps of the 16th and 17th centuries.

12:30 PM to 4:30 PM (Community Room): Root Beer Programs with Jess Edberg, Executive Director of the Dorothy Molter Museum 

Many people visiting the region knew of Dorothy because of her reputation as the Root Beer Lady, but those who spent more time with her also knew Dorothy for her kindness, generosity, tenacity, and strength. Her training as a nurse was widely known amongst residents and visitors alike, and her reputation as a persistent, capable, and independent wilderness woman was respected across the border lakes county. Learn more about Dorothy the wilderness woman with Jess Edberg, the Executive Director at the Dorothy Molter Museum – she may even share Dorothy’s root beer recipe and offer a demonstration!

10 AM to 12 PM (Archives Room): Archives Open House

Are you interested in beginning research on local history? Staff will be in the Archives Room to demonstrate microfilm use and share best practices for beginning a project. Enjoy some curated local material during this drop-in open house!

1 PM to 3 PM (Archives Room): Drop in Story Corps
