Two Harbors, Minnesota – Lake County Historical Society invites families, young readers, and book lovers to join a traditional story, told in both English and Ojibwe, of How the Birds Got Their Songs, a captivating children’s book brought to life by Travis Zimmerman, Sam Zimmerman / Zhaawanoogiizhik, & Marcus Ammesmaki / Aanikanootaagewin. Sam will be reading Friday February 7th at 2:00PM and Travis will be reading on Saturday February 8th, 2025 at 2:00PM at The Depot Mu
seum, 520 South Ave. Two Harbors, MN. Each reading and activities will last approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.
The event promises an enchanting experience as Travis and Sam bring the story to life through an animated reading, interactive activities, and a chance to purchase the book. Perfect for children aged 3 to 7+, this event encourages imagination, traditional knowledge, creativity, language, and a love for reading.

Travis Zimmerman is a proud descendant of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. He has been the site manager at the Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post for fifteen years and has been involved with dozens of Native American organizations, either as an employee or as a board member, over the last three decades. He is the father of two and has two wonderful grandsons.
Artist and educator Sam Zimmerman / Zhaawanoogiizhik is a
direct descendant of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe). Drawing on ancestral connections, Zimmerman continues the Anishinaabe tradition of storytelling, embedding the themes of environmental stewardship and conservation of the North Shore in his studio and public art commissions. Zimmerman’s debut book is Following My Spirit Home: A Collection of Paintings and Stories, and his work is held in private collections in the United States and abroad. The Lake County Historical Society was organized 100 years ago, in 1925, with a mission to “Collect, preserve, and share the history of Lake County, Minnesota.” This is accomplished through operation of three historic sites including the Two Harbors Depot, Agate Bay Lighthouse, and 3M Birthplace Museum. The Depot building is home to LCHS administrative offices and flagship store which is open year-round Fridays & Saturdays for self guided tours. The Society also operates the Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast which is open for reservations year-round. All store sales, B&B reservations, site admissions and memberships help support the operations of Lake County Historical Society.
