The Lake County Historical Society has three fulltime staff people supported by seasonal employees and community volunteers. The staff is responsible for the business of the Society including operations of the museums, the gift shops, the Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast, maintenace and repair of all buildings and grounds, archive management, research assistance and museum exhibit design.

The Lake County Historical Society in Two Harbors, MN is seeking applications for a Historical Society Manager. Established in 1925 the LCHS operates three museums in properties on the national historic register, two gift shops and the Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast.

Qualifications:  Bachelors Degree in history, business administration, non profit management or equivalent professional experience. A preference given to candidates who have demonstrated skills in grant writing, computer proficiency, marketing and establishing community relations.

Compensation range; $35,000 to $45,000 DOE

General Description:

Oversee the Business Operation of the Lake County Historical Society, the Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast, the D&IR Depot Museum/Light Station Museum/ 3M Museum and two museum gift shops.

Brief Organizational Description:

Organized in 1925 the Society has taken many shapes over the years yet its Mission has remained the same; “To preserve and present the history of Lake County Minnesota through the study and interpretation of artifacts, documents and photographs that tell the story of our past and present culture.” Primary funding to fulfill the mission is generated through gift shop sales and the Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast. The revenue earned is reinvested with the following priorities: Staff Salary and Wages, Maintenance and Preservation of our Historic Buildings, and presentation of our history through Museum Exhibits. Archives, publications, and presentations.


All or some:

BA in History, Business Administration or related field

1-3 years working in a nonprofit management or related position

1-3 years in Hospitality/ Hotel Management

1-3 years marketing experience with emphasis on online digital and social media platforms.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must be computer proficient

Manage Payroll, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable with contracted accounting firm.

Experience in staff supervision and employee law.

Ability to communicate and interact effectively with the public.

Skill in oral, written and electronic communication.

Ability to plan, organize and maintain records.

Oversee and Direct the Society as guided by the Mission Statement

               Develop annual budget.

               Explore Grant opportunities and write grants.   

               Identify needs and develop long and short term work plan.  

               Maintain current tax status and insurance coverage.  

               Interact with all Federal, State, County, and Municipal government offices.

               Oversee preservation work on three properties on the National Register of Historic Places in accordance with Secretary of the Interior Standards.

               Web site maintenance, including e-Commerce for donations, memberships, and social media.  

              Support tourism and historic sites by serving on the Two Harbors Area Visitors Bureau.

              Represent the Society at various community meetings.

              Recruit and coordinate volunteer support for Society. 

Oversee the Business Operation of the Depot and Lighthouse Gift Shops (Primary revenue streams).

               Provide support for the Gift Shop and Museum Manager

               Oversee the hiring of summer seasonal staff (14 Seasonal)

               Coordinate merchandise buy in for gift shops with Gift Shop Manager

               Manage Accounts/ accounts payable plan throughout the summer

Oversee the Business Operation of the Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast

               Provide support for the B&B Managing InnKeeper

               Develop and implement Marketing Plan.

               Oversee the hiring of B&B staff


               Annual Membership Drive

               Maintain Memberships Lists

               Writing the quarterly newsletter

               Plan and Host the Annual Dinner

               Secure subcontractors and develop work plan for maintenance of historical properties
